As an author, I care about word count. And so should you.
My argument is simple. If word count is indeed being used by the publishing industry as way to determine the marketability of our novels, then we better invest some time in getting it right. At a very minimum, we should understand the impact our word counts have on pacing and marketability. At most, we could do a deep dive, and study a few benchmark novels (chapter by chapter) that are similar in genre and style.
I created this site after months of searching for something that I soon realized didn’t exist: a comprehensive online word count database for popular novels. If you Google novel word count, you get virtually nothing. A blog post here. A forum there. Maybe you’ll find a guy or girl, smarter than myself, going on and on about how much word count does (or does not) matter. Sure, you can bookmark all these resources in a nice organized fashion, or even create your own spreadsheet (as I did)… but you’re still left with unnecessary work. The goal of novelwordcount.com is to simplify your life in this regard.
And it’s a monstrous task. Finding the data for all this stuff isn’t easy, so bear with me please. My online database dream is within grasp… but still very far from reality. As new entries come in, I’ll add them via blog posts, but I’ll also keep a master list here so you don’t have to keep up with the WordPress eyesore. If you have data to contribute, you can always find me here.
Lastly, feel free to drop me a note for any reason, including data discrepancies. Remember, I’m just one guy working until the wee hours of the morning doing data entry, so the chance of some human error is very real. My dream is for this place where others input word count data as much as I am. We’ll see how we do.
So welcome to NovelWordCount.com! I really hope you’re able to find what you were looking for.
